Got 8 minutes and want to be impressed? Look no further than this 4 piece from LA. Posicore was able to stumble on this band a day after the EP dropped. After speaking with bass player Braxton Marcellous its would appear the sudden widespread attention has been welcomed, but perhaps more of a surprise. As he states, "We started the band just to have fun and to open homie shows."
The EP opens with "Pitch Black," featuring a bass solo and reverb-laden drums—a groove that would find its place well in CBGB's in the late 80s. Throughout the album, there are melodic guitar flights and lyrical content that is introspective yet able to speak broadly to the listener.
Next track is "Oblivion" my favorite track from the album, opens with another great groove, with big guitars, and even bigger vocals.
On "The Glare," the band steps in heavy, leading into a syncopated rhythmic vocal pattern. It's songs like this where you can really appreciate Engine lending their songwriting and creative abilities to the craft. This feels like a scenario where there is more creative gold to be found for this quartet, should they decide to dig deeper.
"Did You Forget" -A breakneck intro, a solid sing along section, and a direct route to what is probably going to be a huge song along part live is the treasure of the EP IMO.
Wrapping up this EP is "Time Spent" - Engine get a chance to display their solid song writing skills with one of their longer tracks, clocking in at just over 2 minutes. Featuring some really great guitar leads and a powerful break down. It goes by fast, so enjoy it while it lasts by.
Don't sleep on this band today as you may well be able to say you were rocking with these dudes before anyone else was. Hopefully there is a full length in the future for this band. If so, we'll be here for it!
